Nitric Oxide binds with the receptors of the enzyme guanylate cyclase, which results in increased levels of cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP), leading to smooth muscle relaxation (vasodilation) in the corpus cavernosum. This results in the increased inflow of blood and an erection.
Viagra is in a class of medications called phosphodiesterase (PDE) inhibitors. It works by increasing blood flow to the penis during sexual stimulation. Viagra does not cure Erectile Dysfunction, as it only helps in maintaining an erection for sex.
What causes Erectile Dysfunction
Penile erection is caused by the engorgement of the penis with blood.
